Nightstand Design and Fabrication
The stages of metamorphosis inspire this nightstand with its forms and aspects of movement. Within this, my concept is rooted in 3 factors; transformation, juxtaposition, and permeability each informing how I constructed the piece, explored the form, and selected materiality.
Transformation: The piece itself depicts the process of transformation, lending itself to be adapted based on the user’s needs. Each stage is represented, beginning with the egg, larva, chrysalis, and adult wing movement as an abstract form connecting each piece with a cohesive visual language.
Juxtaposition: Contrasts were a constant facet of the entire project exploring digital and physical processes of fabrication as well as material fluidity, hardness, and reflection.
Permeability: The design explored how something as personal as a nightstand can have layers made for both private and public realms. The aspect of permeability is focused on to create intimate moments that are not visually accessible at first glance. This creates a separation between the outward public appearance and the private moments that only those invited to touch the object could find; such as peaking behind the fringe or pivoting the tabletop.
