Terra al Cielo, or “Earth to Sky”, is a proposition of a celebration and remembrance of culture, history, and religion. The intention of our modern intervention is to create an inclusive connection within Cortona. It acts as an alternate option for users to travel to the Fortezza del Girifalco as well as efficiently commute around Cortona. Pedestrians are able to gain a new vantage point where they can admire the mountainous terrain while following the historic circulation route set by the Etruscan foundations. The path consists of a stationary portion that allows for programming such as walking, running, and biking, as well as a mechanical portion that makes getting to the top of the hill easier. This new path provides a space that is uninterrupted by motorized vehicles and accessible to all ages. The hope for Terra al Cielo is to make the Fortezza del Girifalco more accessible and visible through modern interventions and direct views from the path creating wayfinding opportunities where the main destination is the Fortezza. The elevated path physically connects the earth to the sky creating opportunities to form community and enjoy the scenic and historic hilltop town. This pathway would be a new form of public transportation that operates for the town of Cortona. It brings users together and celebrates culture, history, and religion by drawing attention to the historic wall, and by physically elevating its users to be closer to the sky.
